Influenza A (of Argentina)
July 6, 2009

 Chanchito

Afraid to travel to Buenos Aires?

When the first cases of swine influenza appeared in Mexico in late April this year, we were not in Argentina. We come back on May 2nd, and at the Ezeiza airport all staff were wearing masks. The feeling of panic was already in the air. At that time, Argentina had suspended all flights coming from Mexico, and there was no case of the flu here.

Over the days, the first case of influenza A was confirmed in the country, and from there, the panic only grew. January 30, 2009

Mates bought in the cities of El Chaltén and El Calafate

One Argentinean habit, as the culture of Tango, soccer and bife de chorizo among others, is to drink the “Yerba Mate” (Ilex paraguariensis). However, the Mate’s history comes of a time prior to the Spanish and Portuguese colonization in South America, when the “mati” was a common beverage of the Guarani and Guaicuru people. Malos Aires
April 19, 2008

 Street on Palermo neighbourhood

Today is the fourth day the city is under a smoke thick blanket occasioned by farmers that have set fire to their lands 50 km North.

It is really a paradox a city called Buenos Aires (”good airs”) with all this air polution. It is very difficult to breathe on the streets and there are people using masks. Even if you stay closed in your home, the smoke somehow enters and contamines the air. I and my husband don’t smoke cigarettes, but our blankets are smelling as if we smoked several packages a day.
